I would also call myself a hardcore racer, and here is what our racing league found.
"Race Quality" setting has an impact on grip. The higher the "race quality", the more grip. I forgot which way as I'm very carefull that I practice at the same "race quality" settings as I know the race will be held at.
"Private lobby" has different grip than "Public lobby"
We always race in Private lobby. There is a bug. If you don't reset the track before running the tires will not heat up properly. A track reset is best accomplished by changing track and then back to the race track. This track reset must be done after the last driver entered the room, or tire temperature can be inconsistant through the field.
I'm very confident on above. Your post made me think of another possibility I never thought of. In our racing league, many drivers test and practice for one week for a race, maybe doing 500-1000 laps. This practice is mostly done with 1-4 people in the room in excactly the same room settings as the race. Come raceday, in qualification many manage to set personal lap records. Race is always held with 14 drivers in the room, so it could be that grip is enhanced with more people in the room.
I haven't noticed any changes within a race, but balance and tirewear sometimes change on full vs. empty tank, not ony being faster on light fuelload.
