Damn I7 920 is easy to overclock. At stock it runs 2.66 GHZ I have managed to get it up to 4.2 GHZ unfortunally not stable. Could probally if I messed with memory timings, but at the time being it's running 4G stable. Have just ran some stress test programs and no problems what so ever at 4G. Should I mention it's the first time I have overclocked a cpu, but why not when I7 920 with D0 stepping should be so easy to do it on.

in the image below from CPU-Z you can see it runs at 4000MHZ.

I could maybe push it a bit futher if I changed ram timings and such to get it stabel at 4.2G.

Here's my opinion of overclocking...and dust :>

as long as the core tempreture stays below 55 degrees i don't see a problem with overclocking. With higher tempretures over long periods can/will shorten the CPUs lifetime. if you overclock CPU (or anything at all) you should google for reviews on that hardware type to see how other people managed. People that clock a lot tends to have sophisticated coolingsystems so if they clocked a cpu to X Ghz with X tempreture without mentioning the coolingsystems, you should play safe and go with a lower Ghz to begin with, play a game for some time, and check core tempreture to see if it's reasonable (i tend to use my 55 degrees limit, but that's my own judgement usually i run around 39-50 degrees with basic CPU fans.) Note that if you have a lot of dust in your PC it may decrease preformance of your PC due to increased heat (personal experience). I decreased my CPU (intel) tempreture by 8 degrees through cleaning up the PC from dust.

take a sneak preview at my profile ;) then you'll see my system is watercooled and have been for many years with templs like 20C on my old E8200 and Q9550. Around 30C with my I7.

Now you mention reviews it is a fact that I7 is very easy to oc even with air cooling. As long you have the one with D0 stepping. There are hardware shops that only sells I7 920 with D0 stepping because that are the one people want since it is so easy to OC.

All intel cpu have thermal protection so it reduces clock or shut down if it gets too hot, so you can't do much damage to a cpu because of that. Besides if you got a popper mobo it will refuse to boot if wrongly oc'ed where 2 x times tunes on/off will reset the settings.

yeah i studied some I7 tech on intels website, they had removed the overclocking limitations so that you can go wild on it, and i believe the thermal protection is removable in BIOS <.< not to recommend though

Acutully they have not. The cpu are still as locked as other intel cpu's since you still can't change the multiplier. If they say that then it's bull and nothing other than a sells trick because the cpu are still locked.

As each revision of a cpu it gets better and better and cooler. Nothin more and nothing less it was the same with the Q6600 G0 revision it was also easy to clock but they haven't changed anything so it was more oc friendly. They never unlock the cpu's. With an unlocked cpu you can change the multiplier.

you are absolutely right, i was reading about a few things and got them mixed up, it's only the i7 Extreme edition (hexacore) that got the overclocking limits lifted. or so they say. (typhical me to get things like that wrong :< ) by the way..Hexa-core doesn't fell good to say :/ what about... Okta-core, feels a bit better. Deka-core ...sounds retarded :/
